may 17,2006 we played a really cool show at headliners music hall. WOW it was awsome regaurdless of the fact thats it was a wensday night. Tons of people showed and all the bands rocked. The line up was The OLB,THE SOL Band,and Subrosa it was a great time,I have seen other bands there and often thought about playing that stage. I once seen Steve vai at headliners=I played the same stage as Steve vai!!!! D.J rhino provided cool visuals and the sound man did a good job for us. The show was video taped as was the audio it turned out great but only by the grace of god! I currently have the audio tapes which sound great! and at least 9 songs from our set will be available as well as a kickin DVD! Big thanks to matt he did all the recording himself with Janet running the camera thanks baby!! We also have to thank the Sol for getting us the gig and Tony for throwin the party! Here is some things from the show including setlist and some cool photo's!........We played a lot of new songs as you can see! check out the new les paul and jay's playing the toby, karl rocks the drums as always!!!!

well, here we go again. What can I say? A lot of our plans fell threw and things where looking bad for a minute there. No TV show, no acoustic Olb ,crap everything fell threw! We have not been playing out much(at all) and this blog has not been updated in months.....Thanks to my- space. I'll be creating a link to our myspace site soon and it will have some of our music on it!!!
So here's the skinny we been down and we are currently clawing our way back to the top. We have at least 10 cool new songs in the works and we are getting ready to record them. (swing)
next tonight we are playing out ! (swing,swing) on saturday we have another gig(swing,swing,swing) and we have decided to do a 2 hour live DVD that will be for sale sometime this summer.(swing....You get the point) I am also gathering material for an official outerloop web site. that should be very cool!!!! so hopefully I will have some photo's to put up of our next 2 shows and a story to go along.

Well, we finally have put wheels in motion for many things. And are waiting to hear back on a number of plans but we are moving forward after a long wait. We have some new songs and a good start on the next grouping of tracks for a new spring CD release. I really don't want to say much but I will say one thing monster will be on this one without any question. So we are going to put that song to bed after all this time. I have to say that this one as always will be very different than last time and very different from alive and dying. But we are still writing very much and have a lot of cool ideals about what we can do to make some songs that we can really get behind!(photo: OLB artwork, this image appears on all the packages sent to labels,radio,etc).

New years rig details

since the new years show I have had several questions about my rig that night. I don't like to give up all my secrets. But.... What the hell here we go.......That night it appeared that I was using my jcm 800 but in reality I was using the 800 and my old blackface twin both amps where on at all times the twin was flipped around backward behind the 2-12 cab so noone could see it!!! During the first few notes we played I could see people giving the 800 weird looks. Of course I had a ts 808 reissue (just got it and its great) Clyde deluxe wah, boss octave pedal and a old mxr phase 90. Photo(my twin and me: in the background the birthday amp)

New years has come and gone!!!

Well, another year down the drain. Also a really great show to close it. In case you didn't know we had an our annual party and this is what happened. The show started at 9:30 (set 1) The crowd was fair considering all the things in this town to do on new years. The set ended with the breaking of a string and after a replacement, we finished the song for good measure. At 11:00 we started again to a slightly larger crowd. I would say my guitar tone was the bomb to say the least. possibly the best I have had for a while. We rocked fo sure but failed to film it. we finished the set just in time for the ball to drop. We did film the 1st set for OLB tv. After everyone was finished with all the shouting and etc. We started what was supposed to be a huge jam. It turned out ok but very unorganized and kind of crazy. there were a few highlights but mostly just insanity. the party ended with a dazed feeling not from booze but just the unsure feeling of,did anyone have a good time ? We rocked and did anyone care? the keg was empty the deli tray gone. the year was on its way!!!

Well, here we are another year is almost over and I find myself reflecting on what we actually did this year. I know it does not seem like we have done a lot, only a few shows, less than any year we have been together. But what people don't realize is we spent the year basically brainstorming on how to turn our band into something more than just sitting around saying "one day wouldn't it be great if...." And we figured out playing tons of shows and all that goes with that is only part of being a band. So what I am trying to say is most of the things we are working on may take a little longer to pull off than booking a show at a local pub. And in the mean time we are enjoying the holidays and still working hard, no worries. We would like to thank everyone who has helped and believed in the OLB and wish them a very Merry Christmas. We hope to see everyone soon and we hope to be rocking out new years eve.

Our lighting concept

well, we had some money to play with and we decided to start the search for the perfect lights. We didn't want anything that would take away from the show, or lighting that was to busy. instead we wanted somthing that just kind of created an overall vibe, part of the fabric of the outerloop show if you will. and effects that reflect who we our and what we are about so what did we do?..............drop light of course you know the kind you hang them under your hood as you work. we replaced the blubs with blue ones for now. green would be cool to. we might be really crazy and add some matching rope light at some point.....wow but really we dont feel the need to have another aspect of the show we have to babysit we have alot to do already and this concept looks cool takes seconds to set up and fits perfect with our overall vibe and concept.

Searching for good show ideals

For awhile now we have been brain storming trying to come up with good show ideals.
We have had several good ones that we are working on but we are always looking for a way to enhance our shows. Why? So that the whole experience of the performance lasts. This is no easy task just ask any real band who has put on a show. Basically the show has to go off without a hitch. I'm not talking about broken strings power failure or even a fight. I'm talking about are the people at the show having a good time, are they waiting around or is there something to do? Is the bar making money?Are you making money? Does everything sound good? Is the agreement between the band and the bar holding up. Last but not least is there an aspect of the show that puts it over the top? Like free food or drinks a costume contest,etc. This is not always a must but we believe its shows like this that create the momentum to have many great shows.

High octane machine a song that's really about going fast,with no regrets,and pushing the limits of his or her machine. I got the ideal for the song after seeing my buddy dave's road runner, complete with a kick ass hemi engine.....He's since sold the car but its memory lives in this song. But this song represents everything we stand for when it comes to motor vehicles...Drive fast, die young, and leave a good looking corpse behind or maybe not one at all.

Well what can I say we just played the colin benefit show and it was crazy! 1st the place was packed. 2nd the show started great then in the middle of the second song bam every light in the house goes. 3rd when we get power back and start the next song I discover I have broken multiple strings on my guitar. 4th then my good friend shawn lets me finish the set with his les paul. Which has crazy low action and is somewhat hard for me to play. Okay after that we managed to pull it together and rock a little. Over all it was a great night all the bands rocked colin got a little money to help out and we just played another great show. Good times,good friends, good music, and a good cause!

A show for a friend

On Oct-22-05 we will play a benefit for our friend Colin. Colin has been a great friend to the outerloop band and is responsible for a lot of my knowledge as a guitar player....This includes chops,gear,and ideals about some musical themes. This fact includes all members of the band. Recently colin was involved in a bad car crash
seriously injuring himself. When the Solman asked us to play the show the answer was easy...When do we go on!

As the war in Iraq goes on I wonder how long it will be before things get even more out of hand here at home. The outerloop band rarely writes political tunes. We've just had other things to say but I think it may be time to user in a new state on mind. I won't come out to and say where we stand just yet. But we have agreed it is time to make a statement on the future. So be on the look out for some new songs that will be heavy both in its message and its sound.

Well guys its been a while since our last show and I know people are saying what's going on............ Well we have decided to commit ourselves to a lot of projects. At first it seemed as if we had bitten off more than we could chew. But after some consideration I decided that we have never given up, worked hard, and the pay off was one we were proud of. This songs message is one that's a little hidden and not really easy to understand. Its about growing up near the landfill here in town. It also deals with the people in the hood where I grew up and my desire to get out of there. So in the song the person gets out only for the folks he's trying to get away from end up popping up other places outside the neighborhood.

This song is about having someone special in your life. Someone who turns it so far upside down that no matter what the deal is, good are bad you just can't let go, you'd do anything even the totally insane just for another second with that person. The rasta inspired song is one of our favorites and the storm in the middle is real we recorded it. I hate to say this but it would have never been there but during recording the tape ran out in the middle of the solo and the track was so good we just couldn't bare redoing it so in went the rain and what is now the second part referred to as "the fire is out" so sometimes things just work.

FINDING OUR WAY

Lately, we have been putting our heads together to try and push the limits beyond anything we've done before! To take this thing called the Outerloop band to the next level. To somehow make us unique, in a way we are going threw a rebirth this means putting some old concepts to bed for awhile and adding some real depth to the music,our art,the concept,and the way we've felt about being in this band. Our ideals have been really good bold even over the top. Soon we will start trying these things to see if they will work. Until then we will try to keep you posted.

Sometimes, when me and club owners are hammering out plans for a show I find myself being overly professional. This is a turn off to a lot of club owners, why? well because this type of behavior makes them aware that your not some stupid rocker they can take advantage of and that just doesn't sit well with them. The other thing is if your to serious they think you might sue them or something. So at this time I have to remember we are a rock band and should act like one. That means sometimes I have to do things without asking after the deal is done. See sometimes if your tell everything your gonna do it'll scare em'. For example the olb just got a new ex- large backdrop not to be confused with a weak banner. One mention of this backdrop and club owner immediately starts thinking its to much of a hassle or where gonna rip the celling down. This type of crap go's on and on. Also don't be confused we as musicians genraly think the clubs have the upperhand. The reality is a club who has slow nights is disparate for money, I have had owners screw me after a great show, just to try and pinch a few dollars. I mean why break a deal with a band because the place is packed and the second we leave so does everyone else....so the owner gets a attitude because the show is over and everyone's not staying till 4:OO. This is very stupid they don't realize if they didn't screw me we'd have more shows and they would make way more money than the few dollars they stole from me to make up for the fact no one goes to the club.......Sorry about the rambling I'm booking shows right now and running into roadblocks. The moral if I had a little more of a rockin roll tude this crap would not bother me so much.

Its set break, and I wish they'd play

Set break is always a challenge I mean how long is a proper set break 30 minutes, 45
how long before people become ressless. Our problem is we tend to go back on to fast and it causes the show to run short. We have came up with some new ideals to keep the mind active that we will be putting into place soon. Until then here are some set break activities we suggest...................................

1. Drink a beer
2. Find someone to make out with!(someone attractive please)
3. Find the v.i.p area and do illegal stuff...
4. Talk to someone you don't know until they ask you to leave them alone!
5. Play on of those little gambling machines with the naked girls.
6. Find someone to make out with!(if the breaks almost over they can now be ugly!)
7. Play a song on the juke box.
8. Tell the band how badass the 1st set was!(hint,hint)
9. Use the potty bum a smoke and get ready to rock
10. PLAY SOME FREAKIN POOL DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looking for venues....Why god, why

One of the most frustrating things a band can face is finding the right venue to host a show. This for us has always been a struggle we are very paticular about things. The size of a room: can we fill it? How does it sound? Is there a stage?
vibe: is it good is it band, light or dark, new or old? Equipment: does the venue have proper P.A ,lighting, seating? Exsiting patrons: people who go there just to be there. things we need:(tables, chairs, pool tables) most places don't have a lot of these things. We are working hard to pick up the slack in case we find a place we like but just happens to be lacking in one of these areas. So currently The Outerloop Band is reviewing possibility's for or next show. Hang on (photo the Outerloop Rocking the bulldog cafe')

Practice makes perfect...Well...

The Outerloop Band has a had a band practice every Sunday for 3 years tighting and beating ourselves into rotten bastards by the end of the 8 hour session, so much to the point at the end of Sunday night we all have bad attitudes and are running to the cars after teardown. On the verge of cursing each other out............So this all sounds bad...Each and every rehearsal we challenge each other to top any past performances. Sometimes that standard results in some intense playing. This type of environment produces feeling and emotions that go from "hell yeah to "well never get anywhere" even all the way to very negative attitudes about the future of the band! Keep in mind the practices are always "good" sometimes great. These feeling often go unexplained and by the time the next week rolls around and rehearsal begins its the last thing on our minds. The result we are a tighter band than anyone ever imagined we could be.
and all of the crazy emotional crap that goes on makes us tighter as friends somehow.

Trying so hard without trying at all

Does having a high standard or ideals about things hold us back from our goals? I mean there has to be another way to go about promoting than what everyone else is doing. After all most of "them" are not doing squat. So why should I send my CD to a small local paper that could really care less about music and more about drama just to get a small write up no one will ever read? Why give radio money to promote a show, when nobody even knows who you are in the 1st place? Why pass out flyers that just hang without even a glance? Because that's what bands do right? Everyone knows word of mouth is the only way right?.........................Well, I figure it like this the only way to make fans is to have product(in this case music) that speaks to them on some level. In another words you have to win them over one by one until they tell a friend then you have to make that person believe do you see a pattern? The problem is its a long and drawn out process. It is at times easier to give up dreams than to follow threw! Or to act like all that bullshit I talked about before is how its done. Nothing speaks louder than action but I'm done wasting time worrying if I 'm missing out because I have not sent our CD to the crappy rock radio . I'm not getting bitter

Alive and Dying the record

I have not really touched on our first record alive and dying very much so lets talk about the concept of the project a little. Well we wanted to make a CD that represented what we did live. We also wanted a album that had instrumental pieces as well as your standard songs that feature vocals. In the end we ended up with a agressive sounding disc that really introduced the band to people nicely. It was recorded at SHOUT recording studios April-may 2003. There are many details that can be discussed
but for now we will leave it at.........We love the material on this CD because it is the first music we wrote together and a reminder of so many great shows. Most of the songs were really kind of wrote out of playing each week. Playing at the solmans show was a great chance for us to get it together and was a big part of our state of mind at the time. So over all the main theme was and still is to make a great rock album, one that makes a bold statement about originality and life.

We are currently writing new songs and are very pleased with them. WE are in the process of booking our next show. We are trying to put space between shows so not to burn you out!. This is a hard time for our band........The writing process is very stressful and some aspects of are personal lives are spiraling out of control. But we are trying to focus and our pushing each other to really make our best music yet.

well here is a shot of T-shirts, CD's, hats, and all other outerloop swag being displayed at the last show. I know this is a very boring photo but I am still very excited about it. See this is the 1st time we have had Olb gear for sale and the 1st time we have had any organization to it at all. While the show played Janet was hanging out just left of the stage selling. It was the only money we made that night and we did okay. (We decided to play for nothing to see if we could get folks to come out to this venue that could have a better vibe, also we were the only act playing so would people show? We looked at it as a gamble on both sides) we should have tried to cut a better deal! The place was packed. But never the less we just got a cool new poster of the band for the table it was pretty nice and we almost felt like a real band again. We did drop the ball on several other issues that night but over all we left having made some money and having played a good show!

Songs from the road vol.2

The road less traveled was the last song we wrote for the CD possibly the one we were most unprepared for besides maybe high octane machine. Almost dropped from the disc due to a recording error at the end of the song. But we said who cares and keep it also making it the title track. The song its self is about all the normal rock lore selling souls to the devil for the stardom, going to the crossroads whatever the song is loosely based on a desperate guitar player who wants to make it so bad he repeatedly asks for directions to the crossroads. To bad the rock icon he keeps asking mind has been ate up by the rebel skull and can no longer communicate with him.
on a personal note this song was wrote a few days before dimebags murder and to me has a creepy vibe that does not always sit well with me. It was very hard to play being such a fan of dime's and knowing that, like all rock gods before him... was taken to early. As a band this could be the last song we write that even remotely reflects the early Outerloop sound we view it as an ending point. We believe we have
made that musical statement and our next CD will sound very different like nothing we've recorded before.

1960 les paul special....Muscle guitar

This is a great guitar with some very nice tones.........Its hot its cold but never luke warm! Its 45 years old wow its currently white on its way to yellow. The p-90's provide bravado beyond belief. Its kind of a hot rod in my mind that's why I choose it to record high octane machine. The neck pick up is one of the most tasty sounds I have heard.

Outerloop after party's

Many times after a show a number of people will be invited back to Outerloop HQ.
This is a great joy for us. It is a time for celebration and a time to see and socialize with each other. If not for the band and its music many of us would not even know each other. So we would just like to say thanks for partying down with us. We would always hope that these get-togethers stay light and fun for everyone...in short, leave your drama at home.

what is the right volume level and how important is it to be faithful to the music?
It seems Outerloop shows are not as loud as they were in 2004 well its because I 'm using a 50 watt amp not 100. We are currently trying to do the music on our last CD justice live. I admit I miss the raw force of volume and it may make a come back but right now I'm more interested in tone than volume.........And I believe the levels were fine at the 07/08/05 show and everything sounded good unless you stood at the bar all night.(check out the band as well as the beer folks)so on that note(a#)please remember this is our 1st show back from a long break so it only gets better from here .....Personaly I had a great time Friday I thought we rocked and my thank you go out to everyone who came. Also the after party was cool.......(at the party I seen an insane jango DVD many thanks to the solman)

At this gig things went well everyone showed up at some point. We did miss a few folks but we'll get ya next time. The sound was good thanks to a much needed sound check early in the day. Not bad for our 1st show after the new album I was a little edgy(my way of saying nervous without saying it. We tried to give the stage a clean look and not have much craziness. We set up everybody side by side (in a line)it worked great and gave us a good look up there!

This is Jay's 70's ampeg svt amp. Jay has 3 svt's total.. The classic head,the svt 2, and this one. We consider this amp the ultimate in bass amps. It is really a great head with legendary tone. Jay also owns the matching 2-15 cab with the original Lansing speakers(they have been removed and replaced with emenice ones to keep from blowing them) This amp is the back bone of our new songs its sounds amazing turned down low as well as turned up! The amp is 300 watts of pure tube tone. That's 6 6550's

karls drum kit details

Karls drums are pretty much a standard 5-piece kit with a few special features....
lets start with the custom made despain snare drum made with all maple constuction.
the other drums are somewhat inexpensive drums so we don't worry much when transporting them. The cymbals he uses are mostly very nice paiste ones.
karl has to many stickers and whatnot to talk about in detail so I'll just touch on a few.

starting at the kick drum is the monster and the madman comic page...This was added a few weeks after we started the band its true meaning is unknown at this time.
What we do know is it features batman the joker and the hulk. other notable things : the sweet wolverine and Hendrix stickers.

Sometimes as musician we get caught up in choosing the right gear. Gear is very important but sometimes it becomes a distraction in the artistic process. For those who know me your thinking "oh brother" like I've got room to talk. I admit I am a gear junkie. It is a evil that has to be, without the tools there is no results.
Every once in a while I somehow remember why I play music.... Its because I am a fan of music the way it makes me feel. Not to sit for hours searching for just the right pedal, amp, or guitar that would look the coolest or let people know how bad ass my gear is. I play to make an artistic statement and one that hopefully might speak to someone on some level. Being human this is sometimes hard to not buy the newest piece of gear I have to have!(right how else will I get that sound)

2nd being in a band and creating music is not always easy. Each member has his or her hang-ups, issues, problems, and lives. So being on the same page is an issue, hell sometimes just being in the room with band members can be hard.........Attitude means a lot. I am not exempt from this. Creating art should be fun and a good time not a ego trip or something to worry about as it often becomes when preparing for a show. Often times band members forget about why they play and become consumed by all the b.s.(band stuff,right)or unrelated personal problem come out and get directed at band members.

last but not least everybody has a right to have a musical opinion. It could be hey "you should turn down" or "that doesn't sound right" or this is better than that
I don't know everything I admit that.but I do know how I want my music to sound powerful,organic,and honest (3 chords and the truth sometimes 2)in short as my good friend bill would say "trust your ears" so keep your heart in the right place.... Creating art not bitching at each other or trying to always make things perfect.(readers note: inside P.M.C checking out all the newest gear)

When we entered the studio in April 0f 2004 to record "Alive & Dying we were not sure what would happen or what the end result would be. One thing we thought we knew was what gear we'd be using......Some things don't turn out as planned. I had planned to use my jcm 800 on all tracks. It was my main live amp at the time. it is indeed on all tracks but very low instead my '65 bassman amp and now long gone duel recto is what is heard most. but one thing didn't change no matter how hard I tried.
the vintage sunburst les paul appears on all tracks alone double tracked on most songs. This instrument is at the core of everything the OLB has done. It was the turning point for me as a musician,songwriter and player. Its of moderate quality and the sound could be described as decent at times at others magical. I was using a Brian Moore guitar before this It was great but never quite right. I own several wonderful guitars but this one speaks to me mmm maybe its the fact that its 2 inches thick or has super hot 500t Gibson pick-ups. I bought this guitar after my now wife then new girlfriend said she liked it I've been with both ever since....So in a way it represents my relationship with her as well as the one with Karl and jay. Its starting to get that "used look" as jay would say. and quite frankly I've played the hell out of it.
its holding up ok but I get more and more worried about something happening to it everytime I put it in the car. So for a while now I been searching for a replacement

lyrics to an old outerloop tune inspired by a very bloody night at pappy's bar.
it happened just after the set was finished someone might have been killed if not for a guardian angel named louie. Here's the part everyone does not know the guy getting beaten on was in big trouble when out of nowhere our friend and expert on almost all things lou decides he's seen enuff and jumps in ultimately saving him. but here's the freaky part the guy louie saved had lost his dad years before and guess what his dads name was? you guessed it louie. when asking the living lou why he helped him he replied "I don't know for some reason I felt like I had to" coincidence or fate........It was a great show up to that point.

This amp was the heart and soul of the outerloops live show. It is responseable for song like "high plains drifter" "original formula" and "saucer" this amp did not work when I got it but colin layed hands on it (it then shocked the hell out of him)then it then worked for alittle while . then the sol man blew it up ,then louie blew it up,then I well you get the point. so after a long visit to greenleaf electronic's
it came back totaly insane. It is the amp that really started the outerloop band and defined the early sound. now it sits peacefully in "the growroom" studio waiting for the moment to rise from the ashes and ride again!

Currently, we don't have a lot I wish we had more.

1. A handful of people who dig the band and thank GOD its growing.

2. ROCK AND ROLL THAT'S BAD TO THE BONE!

the point is we are thankful to the folks that come out to see us....But we have to have things to offer club owners. Its a two way street, they can't pay us if people don't show and I can't lie and say everyone will be there. So Its getting harder for us to walk into a club and with a straight face say we need money to play there. So we are currently trying to find ways to put on a rock show that is both profitable for both party's. One of the ways is to play less, we hate this....We like to play ..And we like to see all our friends at a show having a good time.....I know at this point people are yelling at me. Because people have tried to help, but really one person told me about a venue and when I called they asked if we had 4 hours of covers..We don't even have 3 minutes. You might be thinking well promote oh you mean flyers, radio, local rags,we've done it all. Being an original band is very hard so bottom line everyone always looking for whats wrong, you know this bar are that bar sucks, well at least they let us play and sometimes they even pay us! in conclusion
the only thing we can offer right now is to keep on keeping on.

This guitar was once completely insane with all sorts of gold hardware and pearloid parts............After breaking the neck I came to my senses and returned it to a more original look. I bought this guitar in 1995 used, its true origins are unknown all original parts are now gone. This instrument will rest with me until I am well dead.

Recently there has been much talk about our albums in comparison to each other.......So lets talk about it. Alive and dying is raw and somewhat captures our early sound. Where the road less traveled is more involved, more music, more words. The point is they are very different. Lets examine some statements made by different folks........"Alive and dying is how you guys sound live".........Well to be honest it is how we sounded live. we have evolved and if the truth be told we don't even sound like TRLT any more but that is how we sounded during the sessions. We are constantly changing and the next record wont sound like either.........."I hope the band isn't going soft". This is another one I have heard a lot and much of it revolves around fire sign. Well come on give me a break do think when zepplin put out the rain song (not comparing us to zep) people said they were going soft, no they said that's a cool song. The point is: this is not the last "fire sign" type song for us. "Are you guys turning into a jam band" hahaha the whole outerloop concept was to be a heavy band that jammed in the beginning ,yes we play more live! I compare all this to the comments we received in the beginning things like you should sing more....So we write tons of songs with lyrics only so everyone can tell us later how the instrumentals are their fav's. Last but not least...."Where are all the songs at ?" this of course is in reference to monster,nice girl,right to bear arms,methadone blues,etc at this time we don't know if they'll ever be recorded sorry just another reason to see us live.

shortly after buying this amp we removed the backplate only to find my birth date stamped on the inside. its remarkable sound is somewhere between the plexi and the jcm 800. It was the only amp used on the "road less traveled" album. I know that this amp was meant to find me. it can be seen in the 69 sg and old marshall photo.

this magical guitar was given to me by my wife for our 1 year wedding anniversary. It can be heard on "skeleton man" and the second part to "fire sign"(after the rain) it has low frets due to the fact that its 35 years old. I am waiting for expert luthier colin ennis to get his fret press. Because it could not take a beating with that little black mallet!!!!!

I love this one but the neck is huge not big... Giant. The tailpiece is the coolest.
